Yu-yu é um menino que mora em Kanazawa, na província de Kaga. Ele tem 15 anos e está no terceiro ano do ensino médio. Ele tem a capacidade de sentir os sentimentos dos outros, mas fica preocupado com o fato de não poder dizer não quando solicitado. Um dia, Yu-yu não aguentou mais continuar com o hobby de sua irmã, então ele fugiu de casa. Quem o salva é Megumi Okura. Megumi convida Yu-yu para um parque de diversões noturno chamado "Wonder Hill", onde seus amigos passam um tempo. No parque de diversões, Yu-yu conhece Megumi, Zakusa Ishikame e Tomari Seto, membros do "Team Blackout", um grupo que se reúne para jogar Vanguard todas as noites. Unable to withstand his sisters' teasing any longer, Yu-yu ran away from home and was brought to an abandoned amusement park by a member of Team Blackout. And that is also where Danji is aiming to get his 20th consecutive win, with Tohya standing in his way for that record.
Yu-yu finds Danji in town and attempts to tail him to find out more, but ended up being discovered. Danji senses Yu-yu's interest in starting Vanguard, and allows him to choose a card to be his buddy. Meanwhile, Megumi misunderstands the closeness of Danji and Yu-yu's relationship, and challenges Yu-yu to a cardfight.
The mysterious challenger Katsuki defeats Megumi and challenges Danji to a match, but Danji has a condition: to defeat Yu-yu first. And that's how Yu-yu started his special training with Danji for the cardfight one week later.
The morning after the sudden retirement announcement, the amusement park is labelled with notices for destruction, and Danji goes missing, leaving Yu-yu and the remaining Blackout members troubled. In order to keep the amusement park from destruction, Megumi sets out to meet someone.
Danji joins the town's Pro-Wrestler Association as a regular to revive it, but is shocked to find out that his opponent is none other than Hiroshi Tanahashi. However, being adept at Vanguard as well, Tanahashi suggests having their match in both arenas as "CardFight Pro-Wrestling."
Tohya appears once more at Wonder Hill with his partner Masanori, hoping to have another match against Danji. Danji wanted to accept the challenge from Tohya, but he has yet to sufficiently recover from his injuries the other day to cardfight. And so, Yu-yu challenges Tohya to a cardfight in Danji's place.
Yu-yu seems to be under the weather after his match with Tohya, and suddenly develops a fever and faints at the amusement park. He intends to rest at home, but with his mother and sisters are away on vacation, a concerned Danji suggests looking after Yu-yu at his house instead.
It's the anniversary of the day Megumi and Danji met. However, Danji shows no signs of any intention to celebrate it, and seems to have completely forgotten about it. Seeing that Megumi has started sulking in disappointment, Tomari takes action to lift her spirits.
Yu-yu and the others are surprised as a helicopter suddenly appears in the skies above the amusement park, with Tohya's partner Masanori in it. As his cards are being blown away by the wind pressure from the helicopter, an angry Zakusa shows another side of him that's uncharateristically wild. Will this be the start of a blood strife between Zakusa and Masanori!?
An injured Shinobu arrives at Wonder Hill after encountering card hunters. Danji's facial expression changes upon hearing Shinobu's story, and he sets off alone. When Megumi and the others return to the amusement park after participating in a meeting of leaders in Danji's stead, they find their fallen comrades with a completely changed Tohya standing amidst them.
Yu-yu arrives at the amusement park at night, only to find his fallen comrades, a stolen banner, and Tohya. Tohya challenges Yu-yu to a fight in one week, threatening that "I'll burn the banner if you don't turn up. And I'll burn it if you lose", and departs from the amusement park.
Yu-yu loses to Tohya. Blackout's banner is burned, and his team mates are overwhelmed by their loss and sense of helplessness. Danji returns at this point, and enraged by what he sees, Danji challenges Tohya to a rematch. What will result from this match, and what awaits Yu-yu and friends?
